Pacific people in Aotearoa New Zealand and the treatment of long-term conditions: a narrative literature review about Pacific people's understandings of health and wellbeing
This study explores the persistent health disparities faced by Pacific people in Aotearoa New Zealand, particularly in managing long-term conditions (LTCs) like diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It highlights the importance of understanding Pacific people's holistic views of health and wellbeing, which are deeply rooted in family, spirituality, and environmental factors.
By reviewing 18 studies spanning over 25 years, the research emphasises the need for culturally responsive, family-centred care models that go beyond treating individual conditions to address broader socioeconomic and cultural contexts. The findings challenge conventional healthcare approaches and advocate for strategies that align with Pacific values to improve health outcomes. Read the full article to discover insights into reshaping healthcare for Pacific communities.
