StatsNZ have proposed a major change from the traditional full enumeration census to an admin-data first census in 2028. Although the transition involves several specific risks for the accuracy and detail of Pacific population estimates, it also creates opportunities to improve long standing inequities in population data for Pacific peoples.

Pacific Perspectives responded to the public consultation with the corresponding report. Part 1 addresses the longstanding problems with undercounting of Pacific people in official censuses, and the inequitable consequences for funding, delivery of, and access to public services and therefore outcomes for the NZ Pacific population. Part 2 discusses a potential alternative.
